The internet is one of the potential areas of transformation for the UK economy over the next 20 years, according to a major new government report.
Foresight, the government's think tank, has identified three sectors that could contribute the most to economic development and growth.
These also include innovative manufacturing and greener infrastructure.
The internet is the third area, with the think-tank arguing that "there is potential for a second internet revolution to transform the way we use data, and to open up opportunities for the creation of major new businesses".
Proposals in the report were generated within workshops involving industry figures and leaders.
The findings will be used by the Technology Strategy Board to develop their work emerging technologies and industries.
Commenting on the report, the minister for universities and science David Willetts said: "This timely report looks at how we can benefit from the growth opportunities of the next 20 years in manufacturing, health, communications and energy.
"It calls for more active cooperation between large companies, small and medium enterprises and researchers to plan ambitious strategies for the benefit of their sectors.
"Developments in this area will help strengthen our economy and enable us to lead the way for innovation."
Last week, a major new report by the Boston Consulting Group was published highlighting the contribution of the internet to the UK economy.
According to the group, the internet generates around £100 billion of GDP annually.
